Girls-strasbourg

As Loughborough's student population, you make up a vital part of the community and I want to know more about what you think of the big issues and what your priorities are.

I would like you to interact with me as much as possible so that I can serve you better in parliament and I can represent your views on the issues that matter to you. You can write or email (see link below) or you can interact with me on Facebook or MySpace!

More Students to Receive Grants

More students from poorer families in England are to receive full grants for university, the government has said.

Students whose families earn less than £25,000 a year will get a full grant - up from the present level of £18,000.

Those in families earning up to £60,000 a year will now get some form of maintenance grant.

The Secretary of State for Innovations, Universities and Skills, John Denham, said the changes meant a "major increase in support to students".

This additional support has to be welcomed. However, I also called on the Minister to look at ways of encouraging aspirations among st lower paid members of society to see University as a future option. We need to raise aspiration as well as financial support. For too many people still University is not seen as a right but the privilege of the middle and upper classes. This must end.But at present only 28% of people from lower income homes get to University. It must be more.

What are your priorities?

The NUS say these are your priorities...

5 Challenges_NUS

Five Challenges

Health - NUS calls for prescriptions, dental care and eye test exemptions to be extended to cover all students.

Travel - NUS calls for a commitment to ensure concessionary bus travel for all students.

Debt - NUS calls for the current interest rate on student loans to remain linked to inflation.

Skills - NUS calls for the extension of free entitlement to level 3 qualifications to all adults.

Work - NUS calls for an equal minimum wage to protect our most vulnerable workers, and give them a fair and equal position in the workplace.

but what do you think??

Student Housing Issues

  • New tenancy laws mean your money is protected

find out more about new laws on tenancy deposit protection and how you can make sure you're not losing out.

  • Debate on Student Housing and HMOs

both sides of the debate over the provision of houses for students and the regulations surrounding HMOs (houses of multiple occupancy) - ultimately my aim is to ensure students are living in houses that are safe and meet all the regulatory standards for HMOs (including houses that are too small to come under current HMO legislation) and that all communities in Loughborough remain sustainable with a good mix of student and non-student populations, ensuring that vital community services are not lost.
