Reed Speaks Out For Exploited Workers Around The Globe

Andy Reed MP has written to the Secretary of State for Trade & Industry, Alan Johnson MP, calling for a change to UK Company Law, which presently, allows the abuse of millions of workers around the world.

He is working closely with supporters of charitable organization Action Aid to try and introduce proposals to put in place further regulations on large corporations to take note of any negative impact their business has on communities in developing countries.

Action Aid wish to include provisions for stakeholders to redress their legal or financial obligations if a corporation has neglected the needs of affected communities, as part of a campaign to eliminate corporate abuse of the poorest peoples of the world.

Reed said:

“I have taken up the concerns of Action Aid, and many concerned constituents, with the Secretary of State because I believe this is an important issue that needs resolving urgently.

“We should not tolerate unethical activities, or a situation where people responsible for corporate abuse do not face up to their actions. It is important that the general pubic are aware that workers in developing countries are often exploited to provide produce in our supermarkets that we take for granted.

“I am awaiting a response from the Secretary of State at the Department of Trade and Industry, but will continue to press him on behalf of local constituents.”
