Andy Welcomes ID Card Legislation

Andy Reed MP has given his backing to Home Office proposals on ID cards. The ID Cards Bill which formed a key part of the Queens Speech last week will establish a legal framework for the introduction of identity cards and a National Identity Register.

Amongst the benefits of having an ID card scheme, Reed cited examples of how identity theft (giving people a secure means of protecting their identity) – a growing crime that costs the economy at least £1.3 billion per annum) illegal immigration and working (helping strengthen controls and combat illegal working) and misuse of public services (by helping ensure public services are used only by those entitled to use them), would all be curtailed.

Reed stated “for a relatively small sum, as yet to be confirmed, the benefits of having an ID card for individuals in the country far outweigh any perceived disadvantages”. He added “whilst I respect the right of those people who disagree, I am convinced that the benefits will become clearer to those who are sceptical”.

Reed went onto explain how he particularly welcomed the fact that ID cards would provide a welcome and often under reported benefit for poorer and disadvantaged people. He said “I know from Loughborough constituents who have contacted me of their frustration when being asked to provide identification like a driving license”. He continued “not everyone can afford a car, so having an ID card could well help those provide verification details to enable them to claim the rights that others already have”.
