Loughborough Wharf

October 2005

Following the publication of the plans for the development of the Wharf there has been a great deal of interest from the local community and the Wharf Action Group. I have stated publicly on this site that I prefer plans that give greater public space and the possibility of more heritage space. I have no say over the planning process and can't involve myself in the planning of the local authority but as I played a part earlier in 'saving' the Wharf I felt it important to express my views as a member of the public. However, I have also been keen to emphasise that any alternative plans must be fully costed and realistic.

I took a great deal of interest in the possibilities offered by the Wharf when I was Chair of Economic Development in 1995-97. I helped the Loughborough Echo in their campaign and moved the motion in Council that prevented them buidling the Inner Relief Rd over the Wharf- thereby giving us an opportunity to redevelop the site.

Forgive the pun, but a lot of water has passed under the bridge since then. Schemes have been put forward and they do not seem to have gained significant public support.

Whilst I have no power over the decisions of Charnwood Councillors anymore I do ensure that the veiws expressed by constituents are fed into the process and that any ideas put forward are considered in the mix of debates that take place about this development.
