Reed Welcomes Moves to Ensure Clean Neighbourhoods & Environment
Loughborough MP Andy Reed has welcomed Government moves to ensure clean neighbourhoods and protect the environment locally.
New powers have come into force this month following the passing of the Clean Neighbourhoods & Environment Act 2005. The powers include a clampdown on dropping litter, chewing gum and cigarettes on both public and private land.
It also becomes an offence to sell and repair vehicles on the street as part of a business; the maximum fine for fly-tipping will rise to £50,000; and the law has been tightened concerning those caught illegally transporting waste or benefiting from fly-posting.
Reed said:
“I am very pleased that thanks to the Clean Neighbourhoods & Environment Act there are now new powers in place which will help tackle many of the problems we face in Loughborough.
“It is now an offence to drop litter – including cigarettes and chewing gum – in public, but also on private land too. This will help stop people throwing litter into gardens. There is also a clampdown on fly-tipping with anyone caught facing a fine of £50,000 – I am glad that the penalties now reflect the damage that fly-tipping causes to the local environment.
“We will also hopefully see quieter as well as cleaner neighbourhoods with people being stopped from selling and repairing vehicles on residential streets as part of a business, and the law being tightened on fly posters too.
“Hopefully the new powers will help improve life locally, and ensure those damaging our environment are discouraged from their actions.”
