Reed Backs Local Initiatives for Carers Week
Andy Reed MP has given a boost to local carers by highlighting his support for Carers Week.
This is national initiative taking place June 13-19, which seeks to raise the awareness of carers – people who look after a sick or disabled friend, partner or relative.
From a national perspective Reed said “carers make an invaluable contribution to society and save the Exchequer a huge amount of money, estimated up to £57 billion a year”.
Reed however placed particular emphasis on the work undertaken by local groups in and around Loughborough, such as the Charnwood Carers Project. Based at John Storer House, they provide comprehensive information and support to carers, on many matters ranging from benefit advice to transport and respite care. Reed stated “Charnwood Carers Project play a crucial role in helping and supporting local carers”. He added “I know from talking with local people just how highly they are valued”.
SUCCESSFUL BID
Reed also welcomed the news that Charnwood Carers Project has recently been successful in obtaining a grant of £1950 from the Better Communities Awards 2005/6. This money will be used towards providing new training courses for carers. Reed commented “the award is well deserved, and I am really pleased that those who give up so much time in caring will benefit from this”.
Charnwood Carers Project have organised an information event and several trips during Carers week, with more information available from Karen Robinson at Charnwood Voluntary Service on 01509 631783.
