Reed Backs Police in Loughborough

Labour Parliamentary Candidate for Loughborough, Andy Reed, has backed local police following news that violent crime is on the increase in the town.

Although overall crime remains down and there are more police on the streets than ever before in Loughborough, Reed has vowed to work closely with local police to address violent crime.

Reed said:

“I can understand that people may be concerned when they see a rise in the level of violent crime locally and I will be working with local police to address this. One of the areas that has seen a significant rise is in Quorn, where I live, but I have to say that the police are doing a good job.

“Detection rates locally are the best in the force and I am sure that a lot of the increases can be put down to changes in how crime is recorded. We now have many more police on the streets locally and overall crime is down. Certainly in Quorn we do not have a situation where people are afraid to leave the house – as seems to be being implied.

“Under the Conservatives crime doubled and police numbers shrunk. Labour have put in the investment so that we now have many more police out on the street and crime generally going down.

“However I am not complacent. One of the things we must tackle locally is low level disturbance and disorder – especially the ‘binge drinking culture’ as people like to call it. We are tackling this with not just extra police numbers but also increasing the number of Police Community Support Officers locally. I have been in talks with the local police chief to see how we can get more PCSOs on the beat and will continue to fight for increased funding to make this a reality locally.”
