MP Backs Cafod Launch in Loughborough

Andy Reed MP joined Make Poverty History campaigners in Loughborough last night and gave them his full backing.

Speaking at the event organised by CAFOD, Andy Reed MP told the 60 people present of the leadership taken by Gordon Brown on debt relief and aid for Africa.

Andy also talked about his own experience as a debt campaigner for 18 years and his visit to Ethiopia with Oxfam last year.

Reed said:

“We have a real opportunity to make a difference on global poverty and give justice to the people in Africa. I hope that with Gordon Brown and Tony Blair’s leadership we can persuade the G7 finance ministers to back this concept and contribute the money and will to make it happen.

“We cannot afford to be in the same situation we are in now in 20 years, as we are 20 years on from Band Aid. Something must be done now. I am confident that Gordon Brown can help deliver this as he has on debt relief in the past.

“I have been to Ethiopia and seen first hand the poverty, death and destruction that is occurring daily. We need to unite locally and back Make Poverty History and ensure that our politicians do not forget the importance of what is being discussed for Africa.”
