ID Cards Bill
I have received representations from 4 people to date who say they oppose the ID Cards Bill on principle. I respect their right to have objections but cannot afraid agree with their fundamental objection in principle. There are many outstanding questions but these can be dealt with in debate as the scheme progresses.
Nobody has ever pretended that in themselves ID cards will prevent terrorism or all crime, but if they help in any way the question is does that outweigh any cost, technical or other objections. I don't think for one moment any human right is infringed by being able to prove who you say you are, but I do have reservations over the cost still as well as the technical feasability of the scheme.
Therefore I have voted in favour of the Bill to date as it is mainly enabling legislation.
I have received over 800 representations in favour of the Bill from constituents in a wide ranging consultation.
